Orthopaedic and neurosurgical power tools

Surgical power tools are the most abused equipment in a hospital: autoclaved every cycle, dropped occasionally, and expected to run at full torque afterwards. Handpiece overhaul is bench work, and we do it at our Ahmedabad workshop rather than sending it out of the state.

Department FAQ

Questions we get about orthopaedic

Not answered here? Call +91 98250 70790 and speak to someone who works on the equipment.

01

Our drill handpiece has lost torque and runs hot. What causes that?

Almost always bearings. Repeated autoclaving drives out lubricant and admits moisture, the bearings roughen, friction rises, torque falls and heat goes up. Left alone it takes the rotor with it. Caught early it is a bearing set and a reseal; caught late it is a motor.

02

Can a handpiece be repaired or does it have to be replaced?

Most can be repaired. Bearings, seals, collets, chucks, couplings, cables and gear sets are all serviceable. Replacement becomes the sensible answer when the rotor or stator is damaged on a discontinued model, and we tell you which situation you are in before doing any work.

03

How often should surgical power tools be serviced?

Every six months for a set in regular theatre use, and immediately after any drop or any cycle where the tool was autoclaved wet. Sets used only occasionally still need annual attention, because dried lubricant and seized couplings come from standing still as much as from use.
